Why New Jersey Law Doesn't Fill the Wait

Drive for Uber or Lyft, and New Jersey law requires coverage while you wait for a request: $50,000 / $100,000 / $25,000 of liability, plus PIP and UM/UIM. Dash for DoorDash, and no New Jersey law requires anything for that same stretch of sitting in a lot.

The reason is Malzberg v. Josey. In 2022 the Appellate Division held that the state's rideshare insurance law applies "only to the prearranged transport of persons and not to the delivery of food." A DoorDash order is food. So while you wait, the only coverage behind you is your own policy, and once you accept, what DoorDash adds is whatever DoorDash chooses to carry.

02 · Your own policy

Where Your Own Policy Fits on a DoorDash Shift

DoorDash's coverage is built to sit next to a personal policy that already allows delivery. Here's the same shift on each kind of policy.

The momentPersonal policy that excludes deliveryPolicy written to include delivery
Waiting for an offerNothing from DoorDash, and your policy may not respondYour policy responds first, which is how DoorDash expects it to work
Active delivery, someone else hurtDoorDash's liability for others, at a limit it doesn't state for New JerseyYour liability, with DoorDash's coverage able to apply as excess over it, per DoorDash
Active delivery, your car damagedOut of pocketYour comp and collision, if the wording reaches active deliveries

A Warning From DoorDash Itself

DoorDash's insurance page cautions that a rideshare endorsement may not cover your car the whole way through a dash. Its own example is an endorsement that covers vehicle damage before you accept an order, but not during the delivery.

That's the difference between a rideshare endorsement and one that names delivery. Some do and some don't, so ask for the form and look for DoorDash or delivery by name. How rideshare endorsements differ.

The bottom lineDoorDash's coverage protects the people you might hit. Your car, and the minutes between offers, are your policy's job.

Coverage depends on the policy's actual forms and endorsements. Endorsement terms vary by insurance company, and the policy wording governs.

03 · The real question

Do You Need Special Insurance for DoorDash

The honest answer: it depends on your policy's wording, and you won't know until you read it or your insurer answers in writing.

Three things are certain. DoorDash's requirements page says your insurance "must meet local requirements." In New Jersey, a standard policy's minimum is $35,000 / $70,000 / $25,000 of liability for policies issued or renewed since January 1, 2026. DoorDash says its own coverage applies only when you're actively dashing. And DoorDash's coverage never pays to fix your car.

So the question isn't whether you have insurance. It's whether your policy still answers once the app is on. If it excludes delivery, you need a delivery option or an endorsement that names DoorDash, or a commercial policy if dashing is your full-time work.

Either way, tell your insurer you deliver for DoorDash. If it finds out after a claim, you can be left paying out of pocket, and it may decline to renew your policy.

DoorDash's requirements page lists New Jersey among the states where Dashers must be at least 19. If you're 19 or 20 and on a parent's policy, read our guide for young drivers on a parent's policy before your first dash.

  1. Pull your declarations page

And the policy's exclusions. Look for wording about delivery, carrying property for a charge, or a "transportation network."

  2. Ask your insurer, in writing

Does this policy cover me while I'm online with DoorDash and waiting for an offer? And during an active delivery?

  3. Find out what fixes your car

DoorDash won't. Your comp and collision only help if the policy's wording reaches delivery.

  4. Fill the gap, or send it to us

A delivery option, an endorsement that names DoorDash, or commercial auto if dashing is your main job. Send us your dec page and we'll tell you which fits.

FAQ

DoorDash Insurance Questions from New Jersey Dashers

Straight answers from DoorDash's own pages and New Jersey law.

Do you need special insurance for DoorDash?

It depends on your personal policy's wording. DoorDash says your own insurance is primary while you wait for an offer, and its coverage doesn't pay for your car. If your policy excludes delivery, you need a delivery option, an endorsement that names DoorDash, or commercial auto. Tell your insurer you dash and get its answer in writing.

Does DoorDash insurance cover my car?

No. DoorDash says its coverage does not cover damage to your own vehicle; that's your personal policy's job, provided your policy covers delivery activity. DoorDash's liability coverage protects other people during an active delivery.

What are DoorDash's insurance requirements in NJ?

DoorDash says your insurance must meet local requirements. In New Jersey, a standard policy's minimum is $35,000 / $70,000 / $25,000 of liability for policies issued or renewed since January 1, 2026, along with PIP and UM/UIM. Meeting the minimum doesn't mean your policy covers dashing; that depends on its wording.

Do I need to tell my car insurance if I do DoorDash?

Yes. If your insurer learns after a claim that you were delivering and the policy excludes it, you can be left paying out of pocket, and the insurer may decline to renew your policy. Telling it up front is also how you find out whether you're covered.

How old do you have to be to DoorDash in NJ?

19. DoorDash's requirements page lists New Jersey among the states that require Dashers to be at least 19 years old.
